Here we go again, the return of The New Warriors. I always kind of saw them as Marvel’s answer to the Titans, but with less fanfare. I was an avid fan of each incarnation of the team and am personally glad to see the team back. With everything going on over at the house of ideas, this book looks to be interesting. The ‘The Initiative’ banner across the top makes me worry that this will be a short term deal (the same with the new Avengers title) but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In case you weren’t familiar with the backstory, the New Warriors were smack dab in the middle of the events that lead to ‘Civil War’. Considered villains by most of the American populace, the only surviving member of the active team (Nova, while a member of the team, was off planet [read Annihilation] at the time) is now hiding in plain sight as Penance (Speedball).
The issue picks up with, former New Mutant, Wind Dancer who now lives in New York since losing her powers after the whole M-Day affair (read House of M, and Decimation). She’s beginning to readjust to civilian life when a friend from the past re-enters her life and starts to turn things upside down. I don’t want to tell you too much because you should give this book a try. A couple of other characters are featured in the book, but the new team itself hasn’t actually formed yet. What’s interesting is how many existing story arcs this title will have a hand in. We know about ‘The Initiative’, we know about ‘World War Hulk’, but don’t forget how characters like Sofia (Wind Dancer) will factor into the ‘Endangered Species’ story line that is right around the corner.
I’m waiting to see if this new book has the same super team feel that the old series had, or if Grevioux goes in a new direction. With so many major story arcs going on as well as so many newer characters getting their share of the Marvel spotlight, this seems like a new series worth keeping your eye on.
Dante can’t wait for ‘Old Warriors’ starring in ‘Club Med Crisis!’
